Is there no place like home?
Rabbi Nachman of Bratzlav told the following story:
Once there was a poor Jew named Abram, who lived in a certain small
village in Bohemia. For 3 nights in a row he dreamt that in the city of Prague, under the St. Charles bridge, was buried a great treasure. Having a dream 1 time means nothing; 2 times, maybe something, but 3 times? He travelled on foot to Prague, eventually arriving at the foot of the bridge and then, just stood there. It seemed almost impossible, trying to figure out how and where to dig for the treasure, because
countless individuals were constantly walking to and fro over the bridge. And so he stood there deep in thought for several days and nights.
Eventually, the soldier patrolling that end of the bridge noticed
Abram standing there, like a fixture, and asked him why he was there. Abram thought if he told the soldier the truth about the dream, the soldier would help him dig for the treasure and then split it with him.
When he told the soldier about the dream, the soldier just laughed
and said: “Silly Jew! Why are you paying attention to dreams? I also have had a dream that in such and such a village, in the cellar of a certain Jew named Abram, there was buried a great treasure. So because of a dream I should travel all the way to some poor Jewish shtel and dig a hole?
Abram immediately returned home, dug in his cellar and found the
treasure.
Each of us have a treasure deep within ourselves, but doubt that fact or are often unaware of its presence, until one day, a total stranger mentions our treasure to us and only
then, do we begin to dig within in to find it.
What do you think?
